The Bible Tells Me So Devotional

In this devotional booklet, 16 members of Banner Elk Presbyterian Church share their favorite Bible passages and what these passages tell them. We hope that in them you will find inspiration for your walk with the Lord. Published in November 2023, the 20-page booklet is available at no cost at the church. More from Pastor Whit:
“Jesus loves me, this I know, for the Bible tells me so.” These are words we know by heart and have sung many, many times. And they speak a very important truth.

Our theological tradition teaches us that God can be clearly seen in Creation. The psalmist declares, “The Heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of His hands.” The order, intricacy, and wonder of creation testifies to the existence of a powerful and glorious Creator.

Yet, as wonderful as the universe is, it does not reveal everything we need to know about God in order to be His people. Knowing this, God chose to reveal Himself to special people and in special ways. And of course, God’s most special revelation is in Jesus, the Christ.

The Bible is our treasured witness to God’s very special revelation; without which we would never know of God’s justice, mercy, and will for His world. And without which we would not know that Jesus loves me, you, and all of his children.

Philippians 4:7 & 4:9
And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus… Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me – put in to practice. And the God of peace will be with you.

Why Is It a Favorite?
Just ask anyone who really knows me- I am an expert at running away and hiding when I don’t know what else to do. I know and believe in the promises made to me in the Bible.

However, I am imperfect, so feelings of fear and inadequacy create uncertainty and overwhelm. Running away creates loneliness and isolation from Gods presence and the protection that is so freely offered to me. Sometimes I have to really work at reminding myself that God not only expects me but wants me to run to Him, that He actually wants me to leave my troubles and anxious thoughts with Him! Imagine that!

So, thank you God, for loving me so much that you want to share all my burdens as well as my many blessings! I know that you have a purpose for my life even though I may not see it. Help me not to run from my worries but to trust in You and run to You for comfort.
